Those westerlies coming off the Tasman carry salt a long way inland, and it eats away at outdoor units that aren't looked after. Fitzroy, Moturoa and the streets nearest the water cop the worst of it, but even Bell Block and Waitara see it. How long does it take to install a heat pump?
A straightforward single high-wall unit usually takes half a day, roughly three to five hours. If the outdoor and indoor units sit far apart, or we're threading pipework through an awkward wall, it can run longer. Ducted systems take a day or more depending on the layout.
Where should an outdoor unit go in a coastal home?
Keep it clear of the direct salt spray where you can, so a sheltered side of the house rather than the exposed seaward wall. It still needs airflow around it and easy access for rinsing and servicing. Off the ground, level, and away from bedroom windows so the fan noise doesn't bother you at night.
Do I need a building consent to install a heat pump?
For a standard high-wall or floor-mounted heat pump, no, you won't need a building consent. The electrical and refrigerant work has to be done by qualified people, which we handle. Larger ducted work or anything structural can be different, and we'll tell you upfront if a job needs more.
Can you install a heat pump in an older weatherboard home?
